In January 2007 a blog post on ecoIron proposed the theory that a black version of the Google search engine would save a fair bit of energy due to the popularity of the search engine. Since then there has been skepticism about the significance of the energy savings that can be achieved and the cost in terms of readability of black web pages. We believe that there is value in the concept because even if the energy savings are small, they all add up…

The pre-manufacturing stage is a significant stage for all of the environmental parameters, besides human toxicity potential. PC manufacturing consists of rather simple processes such as assembly and packaging. For improving the environmental performance of PCs, environmental management approaches of design for the environment and green procurement are recommended. The use stage has a significant potential due to the electricity consumption. The disposal stage’s contribution to environmental impact was largest in human toxicity, and second largest in ozone layer depletion potential. The PC recycling can inhibit many environmental impacts with the exception of the ozone depletion and ecotoxicity potential.

The openLCA project will create, in the coming 1.5 years, a modular software for life cycle analysis and sustainability assessments. The software will be available as open source, and will be available for free. Initially, a basic framework for life cycle assessment (LCA) calculation and two plugins will be implemented, a format converter and an uncertainty module. The format converter serves to convert relevant LCA data formats from one to the other, in a lossless manner. The uncertainty module will help to specify, calculate, visualise and interprete uncertainty in LCA product systems.

Designs by Gilles Belley, in collaboration and with technical support of EDF R&D design:
– An energy saving adaptor which displays useless energy consumption due to standby mode and automatically turns off office equipment that are left on unnecessarily.
– An “electrical semaphore” which provides information concerning production variations (national energy production varies according to the time of day and depends on the intensity of our activities), by changing color : green during off-peak hours, blue during busy periods and orange to indicate peak hours in local production.
– A charger which eliminates energy waste : it automatically cuts off the power supply when the device is fully charged. Several cords can be attached to it.
– A range of sockets, switches and plinth which reveal the electric landscape: the shadow of these equipments is highlighted by a faint light, which shows the electricity level of use.

Sustainable day: The green pc, a transition towards sustainability; June 14th, 2007

An interesting report on the annual Microsoft and IDSA “Next-Gen PC” design competition. Sustainable Day dug around the entries to filter out some more inspirational examples of what a sustainable personal computer alternative could be like in the near future.
