Internet for peace

On the cover of Wired n.10 (December 2009) there’s a quotation from Shirin Ebadi: “io nomino Internet patrimonio dell’umanità” (I designate Internet heritage of humanity). It’s the sentence which opens an issue of Wired Italia, entirely written around their proposal of the Web as a candidate to the Nobel Prize for Peace 2010.

A meme is a postulated unit or element of cultural ideas, symbols or practices, and is transmitted from one mind to another through speech, gestures, rituals, or other imitable phenomena. Richard Dawkins first introduced the word in “The Selfish Gene” (1976) to discuss evolutionary principles in explaining the spread of ideas and cultural phenomena.
The following are two videos dealing with memetics, which also present considerations about informatics, technology and human development.

John La Grou unveils an ingenious way to use available and cheap technologies that will smarten up the electrical outlets in our homes, using microprocessors and RFID tags. The invention, Safeplug, promises to prevent deadly accidents like house fires, and to conserve energy.

However, the desktop is a customized version of Enlightenment DR17, one of the most underrated and underexposed desktop environments available; goS puts many of its advanced options and features to good use.

Google’s efficiency

For the first time, Google showed some current design of custom power supplies used in their server farms. The company has a team of hardware engineers dedicated to the design of motherboards and other electronic components that go into Google’s servers to make them more power efficient. These engineers will then go to OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) and suppliers and order these custom-built servers.
